On September 2010, I joined the International Competition and Assessment for Schools competition. It is a competition held annually by the University of New South Wales. There were actually 5 subjects offered, including ITGS, Mathematics, Science, English, and writing but our school competed in 3 of them, which are Mathematics, Science, and English. I got the opportunity to compete for English and Science subjects. It was actually my second time joining this competition, the previous year I also joined this competition. Before the competition, several drills and practices were held to make sure that we are ready for the competition. The questions from the previous years were given so that we know what the questions are going to look like. After about 1 month of practice, the English ICAS competition were held. We were given 60 minutes to answer 60 questions. The competition was held at 8 am and finished at 9 am. The questions that were given to us were challenging, because it involves all aspects of the language, in which we need to re-read the text before deciding which answer to pick. I found it quite challenging to finish the competition for just an hour, but I did finish them in the given time.
The following week, the Science competition was held. The Science competition had 45 questions with 1 hour to answer. On this test we had to be careful because we had to do calculation, interpretation, and analyzing to the questions. Moreover, the options were very similar to each other. We had to recheck everything to make sure we didn’t make mistakes. Actually I found the questions not too hard to answer, but the time is rather limited so it made me hustle to finish it. 2-3 months later, the results from this competition were handed out. I got 29 out of 60 for English and 29 out 45 for the latter. I am very proud of myself and I thank God and the school for this opportunity. From this experience, I got some valuable lessons. Since this is an international competition, I felt blessed that I could join this because it was a great test to my ability and my skills. I could also enrich myself with knowledge on questions at international level, which would help me with my studies in IB and in the future. I hope to be joining this competition again in the future to help on my studies also.
