Surabaya Sejahtera Program

Surabaya Sejahtera Program is a program held by the government, in which 5000 volunteers ranging from students to adults help in making the streets of Surabaya clean. Our school was one of them. Pre IB and IB students were asked to volunteer in cleaning the streets of Surabaya. The program was held on Saturday, 11 December 2010 starting at 6 a.m. We gathered in front of the Siloam Hospital to clean the Gubeng street. We were ready with our “weapons” and we immediately started working. We started cleaning the pavement in front of De Boliva café, all the way to the pavement near the traffic lights near Delta Plaza. It was a very hard work indeed, because there were dirt left over by motor cycles and cars passing through the pavement, but doing it with friends makes it a fun experience. We also got to take pebbles and stones from the sidewalk. The fun thing is, we actually got help from the water truck of the government that helped to spray water to make it easier for us to clean the sidewalk.
We worked together as a team with the Yellow Troops also, and we had a lot of fun helping them. We finished around 9 am, and I was very pleased with myself. It was something that we rarely got to do, and this program has brought awareness to us that we should pay attention to our city and those people working to help maintain the city clean. I find this program very beneficial for the city and I would love to do this again in the future.
