IB Life So Far

Last year, I entered the IB Diploma Program. It is a 2 year program, and it is widely recognized in universities around the world. For the IB program, I have chosen to take English, Mathematics, and Physics Standard Level as well as Indonesian, Psychology, and Business and Management Higher Level.

So far, I think that IB has brought me challenges on a new level. As an IB student, I am required to have a global perspective and be a critical thinker. Also, the tasks requires commitment and a good time management. In conclusion, I think that IB has brought the quality in me that is required to be a better learner, and I will continuously try to improve and maintain my scores to get the IB Diploma :)

Week Without Walls - Desa Blimbingsari, Bali

For this year's Week Without Walls, grade 11 went to Bali to a Christian village called Desa Blimbingsari. Here we were required to stay at a villager's house. At first I was not that excited about coming, but when I got there, I thought that my house owner was a very sweet and kind lady, and that we should respect her as she has provided us with shelter. Our house was not the biggest house, but it had enough accomodation for us to live.

During our stay at the village, we also experienced several activities, such as teaching, and furthermore we got to learn about the making of several house equipments and foods through our visit to the home industries in the village. One of the things that sparked interest in me was the making of sapu lidi (broomstick). The broomsticks were made of dried coconut leaves which will then be shredded in order to take the little stem in the middle. One broomstick required at least 50 of these, and they are sold for only Rp. 1000, compared to the prices in the city which could reach up to Rp. 10000. I was quite surprised at the fact that they sold the broomsticks at a low price, while the price of cultivating coconut trees is not cheap. But then again, I was humbled by the way that they could be happy with their living, although they lead a modest live.

The second thing that we did was to teach elementary students in SDK Maranatha. Most of the students here are orphans from Widhya Asih orphanage, which was also located in the village. My group and I got to teach the fifth grade a Christmas song "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". It turned out that they were already familiar with the song and we did not have to waste a lot of time. We proceeded to the games, where we played pass the cards. The winner will receive a package we have already prepared beforehand. We had a lot of fun teaching the students, and we found out that teaching is not as easy as it looks. We had to deal with he noise as well as to control the students.

Overall, we had a pleasant trip to Desa Blimbingsari, Bali. We got to experience what it feels like to live in the "Real World",  outside our comfort zones. :)

IndonesiaISME

As a part of the 2 year event “Future Awaits Festival”, the school invited several universities and institutions, both local and international. Aside from having the opportunity to know more about the universities during this event, the school also invited a well-known academic figure, Professor Yohanes Surya and his team. He gave out a lecture about the brain and how every person has the potential to be a great, because each of us has been given the same brain. He encouraged us as students to continue training ourselves. The school also invited other schools to listen to the seminar. After the seminar was over, we had a speech competition themed “IndonesiaISME” which can be read as Indonesia is me or Indonesiaisme.

Me, Samantha, and Vinsen from grade 11 IB were chosen to be Cita Hati’s representative for this competition. We were given notice just a few days before the deadline and we had to make a poster as well as an essay about this topic. However, we didn’t get to present our essay because of lack of preparation. This event was quite a huge one, because we supposedly had to present our speech in front of Prof. Yohanes Surya. This opportunity is a unique one, and if I was given this opportunity again, I would do my best to make the school proud :)

Creativity, Action, Service

As part of the International Baccalaureate requirements to complete, I have to do 150 hours of CAS, with 50 for creativity, 50 for service, and 50 for action. I have found this activity to be quite challenging, as we have to constantly come up with fresh ideas of what we're going to do for CAS.

One of the activities that I have done this year was the Physics Buzzer Obstacle course. I made this project alongside my fellow Physics classmates as an exhibition model for the open house. We made this project with the guide of our Physics teacher, Ms, Maria Liza Valero. This was one of the most challenging things we had to do, as we had to cut the woods and assemble the electrical course ourselves. When we are done, we felt really proud of ourselves and from this project we had obtained 2 hours of creativity as well as 2 hours of action.

Another cool thing that we have done was the mini experiment for the open house also. We had to come up with interesting and cool science experiments for 6th graders and we had to explain to them as well about the theories behind each experiment. Me and my classmate Oliver did an experiment about magnetism, which sparked the interest of mainly male pupils. They were more attentive when they visited our tables than the female students. Nevertheless, we had fun teaching them about magnetism and as a class we had so much fun as this is one of our first experiences teaching :)

International Competition and Assessments for Schools

In August last year, I joined a competition called International Competition and Assessment for Schools, which is an annual competition held by the prestigious University of New South Wales in Australia. The competition was a chance for me to challenge myself on a global level since the competition is an international competition. There were supposedly 5 categories being offered: Mathematics, Science, English, and IT, and Writing. I got the privilege to be chosen to join the ICAS Science competition. This is my third year joining ICAS. On my first year, I was chosen for the English category, and for the second year I joined the English and Science competition.

In order to prepare for this competition, the school held out drills for several weeks. The drills lasted for around 1 month and on the … of … 2011, I participated in ICAS Science. There were 45 questions with 60 minutes duration to answer, On this test, several previous year’s questions popped up, which was advantageous for us. The test involves calculation, data analysis, and data interpretation. The time given flew by so quickly and before I knew it, it was almost time to finish. Around 3 months after, the results were given out. I got … out of 45.

I thank God and the school for giving me this opportunity, because I could compete with international students, and this has been a measure of my capability in the Science subject. In the future, I hope that I would be given another chance to participate in the ICAS competition or similar competition, as it would be very beneficial for my IB studies. :)

Since next year I'm going to take IB, this year acts as a preparation for me for greater challenge offered by the IB program. IB program is very serious, and it is a 2 years program. In IB I'm going to take Mathematics, English, and Physics SL, and also Business Management, Indonesian, and Psychology HL. However, I'm still hoping that the Economics class will be open because in university I'm going to take Economics as my major. This scholarship will surely help me and my parents especially with IB coming up. I really hope that I could get this scholarship and I will try my hardest in IB Diploma program to maintain my scores.
